IRS Urges IP PIN Setup Before November Maintenance: Plan for 2027

The IRS urges IP PIN preparation before mid-November maintenance. Separate account access, enrollment and the new PIN needed for returns filed in 2027.

Original timeline: prepare account access and enrollment in 2026, retrieve a new PIN in January 2027 when available, then use the filing-year PIN. Keep login credentials private.

The IRS reminded taxpayers on October 22 to protect their online-account credentials and consider an Identity Protection PIN before the service’s annual maintenance. For someone preparing to file a US federal return early in 2027, the useful task now is to establish access and understand enrollment. The PIN obtained in 2026 is not the number to reuse next year.

What the October reminder changes on your calendar

The IRS says people planning to file early in 2027 should request an IP PIN before the online system becomes unavailable for maintenance in mid-November. It generally becomes available again in mid-January. Those are approximate service windows, not an announced November closing day or a guaranteed January reopening date. Check the IRS page for current availability before relying on a particular day.

The program itself is not new. The reminder creates a practical reason to resolve access problems before the maintenance window. If you already participate, first check how you enrolled and how you will obtain the next annual PIN; submitting another initial application is not the same as retrieving an existing PIN.

The calendar year of filing controls the PIN

An IP PIN is a six-digit number used to help verify identity on federal tax returns. It is available to people with an SSN or ITIN who can verify their identity, including people not required to file. It does not determine whether you owe a return or how much tax you owe.

Keep two years separate: the tax year covered by a return and the calendar year in which you submit it. A 2026 tax return filed in 2027 needs the applicable 2027 IP PIN if the filer has an IP PIN requirement. A late 2024 return filed in 2027 also uses the current 2027 PIN. A number obtained during October 2026 is valid for filings during 2026, not a permanent credential for later years.

The IRS FAQ describes continuous enrollment and one-time enrollment. Continuous enrollment carries participation into future years, with a new PIN each year. One-time enrollment ends at the close of the calendar year. If you choose one-time enrollment in 2026, do not assume participation continues into 2027; check your status and re-enroll when appropriate. Online participants generally retrieve their annual PIN online rather than waiting for a mailed notice.

A three-stage checklist without recording the secret

Use a private calendar or task list for the workflow below. Record completion status and a reminder, not the PIN itself. Nortune does not need your SSN, tax forms, login or PIN.

The table is an organizational aid, not an IRS deadline schedule. If identity verification or retrieval fails, use the official alternatives rather than guessing a number or assuming the old one will work.

Separate account access from return preparation

The IRS Individual Online Account can contain balances, payments, tax records and notices. Keep its sign-in credentials private. A trusted preparer may need your IP PIN when you are ready to prepare and submit the return; that does not mean handing over your account login.

Go to IRS.gov directly to find the service. Treat an unexpected message asking for your PIN as a warning: the IRS says it will not request an IP PIN by phone, email, text or social media. Store the number securely rather than putting it in a shared calendar, an unprotected document or a reply to a message.

New enrollment and a lost PIN need different routes

If you cannot establish online access, the enrollment page describes alternatives including Form 15227 for eligible applicants and identity verification at a Taxpayer Assistance Center. Eligibility, documentation and processing time differ; review the current instructions instead of assuming immediate access.

If a PIN was already assigned, use the IRS retrieval or reissue guidance. Form 15227 is for new enrollment, not a replacement PIN. Maintenance and other restrictions can affect reissue. A missing or incorrect required PIN can cause e-file rejection or delay paper processing, so resolve the applicable requirement before treating a return as ready.

Keep the protection in its proper scope

An IP PIN is not a credit freeze or a promise of faster refunds. Use Nortune’s credit-report triage guide for a separate review of credit records; that process does not replace federal-return identity protection. These explanations concern the US federal system. Reading them in Spanish or Japanese does not establish a Puerto Rico or Japan resident’s filing obligation, and local tax systems have their own rules.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a PIN obtained in 2026 to file in 2027?

No. The PIN applies to filings during its calendar year. If an IP PIN is required for a return submitted in 2027, obtain the current 2027 PIN, including when filing an older tax year.

Does one-time enrollment in 2026 continue automatically in 2027?

No. One-time enrollment ends with the calendar year. Continuous enrollment continues participation with a new PIN each year; online participants retrieve that annual PIN online. Check your enrollment status.

Will an IP PIN make my refund arrive sooner?

It does not guarantee faster refunds. A required PIN helps verify identity; missing or incorrect PIN information can cause rejection or delay. Other return checks still apply.
